In defense of the Somewhat Indefensible Elisabeth Grant

At first blush, everything about Lana Del Rey screams "fake". A wannabe posuer. Psuedo-hipster Astroturf.

So of course right away I want to not like her.  After her performance on SNL last night - which I'll get to in a moment - I performed a cursory web search that yielded the following results.
  • the fact she's the daughter of an internet millionaire
  • in spite of the fact that her dad was a millionaire,  claims to have lived in a trailer home and was barely able to afford Cocoa Puffs, which is I guess a weird way of saying you're having trouble making ends meet?
  • the fact that she admits that her stage name "came from a series of managers and lawyers over the last 5 years..." (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lana_Del_Rey )
  •  her first album has mysteriously vanished (a la Alanis Morissette)
  • and of course rumors of plastic surgery
First off, I cannot confirm the fact that her dad is indeed an incredibly wealthy man; judging from his website, he kind of seems like a guy who just did alright for himself in the shady field of domain name speculation and designing crappy-looking websites seemingly modeled off of his own crappy-looking website. And she does seem to have quite a bit of representation and management  for a girl who used to live IN A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER!!!! but whatever.  I certainly don't see any smoking gun indicating her daddy bought all this for her.  To the contrary, it seems like she had a wild streak and her dad sort of disowned her for a bit. That would explain how she could live in a trailer park yet still have a penchant for top-dollar breakfast foodstuffs, right?

The disappearing of her first album is pretty weird, but Alanis Morissette did the same damn thing.  Now that I think of it, many of the issues people have with Lana have previously been mentioned in reference to Alanis.  OMG - if you rearrange the letters in 'Alanis', you get 'is Lana'...they're the same damn person, I bet!  I mean, who has heard from Ms. Morissette lately, hmmm?

As far as the plastic surgery goes, I just don't see it (disallowing, for the moment, the very real possibility that she is in fact Alanis - then she'd need to have had the surgery). Her lips don't look that different to me; they just appear to be painted differently. I will wager that she wears a wig, though.

Now, back to SNL.

Having not heard of her before last night, I was not subject to any buzz expectations, however I, like Juliette Lewis, was a little underwhelmed by her performance of 'Video Games'.  In an apparently since deleted tweet, she was heard to remark:

“Wow watching this ‘singer’ on SNL is like watching a 12 yearold in their bedroom when theyre pretending to sing and perform #signofourtimes.”

But Juliette is a Scientologist who supports Ron Paul for President and seems to post her every damn thought on the interwebs, so I take that with a grain of salt.  Plus she is a chicken shit and retracted it the next day. Have the courage of your convictions, girl! (Loved you in 'Natural Born Killers & 'Shit Grils Say', BTW) Let's move on.

Her next song (also, of course, her last, as you would know if you stayed in on Saturday nights like me often enough that you could basically be the show runner for SNL if you had to) was the one that got me.  And not just her singing, or the lyrics; no, was I really enjoyed was the musical sensibilities of Blue Jeans.

OK, I'll admit I have no idea WTF the deal is with her voice. Maybe she was just nervous.  But no one can accuse her of lip-synching like Ashlee Simpson, amirite?

Now, of course, the lyrics are hardly original.  Hell, I'm sure you could probably pick every line in the chorus from another song. And the whole song reminds me a little of 'Wicked Game'.  But I don't care.  I just don't effing care.  Her key changes are interesting and exquisite. And she writes her own material, which is a huge plus in my book.

Here's a better version, just because I love you guys:

Oh my God.  That's the stuff - right when the music grinds to a halt after she says "end of time". Love it!

Shuffle knows you...

It really does. Better than you know yourself. Or maybe it's just more brutally honest than you can allow in the dank tenement room you occupy, not even noticing the smell of crushed buckets of old chicken bones, oblivious to the clatter and crunch of empty beer cans underfoot as you walk the well-worn path to the fridge and back to the couch again, where you more collapse than sit on the darkened sticky cushions....what was I taking about?

Never mind. Let's us click on "shuffle" and delve straightforward into the murky depths of the subconscious and see what creepily brushes against us, shall we?

1) Fuck and Run - Liz Phair

2) Bricks Crumble - Dälek

3) Fur Elise - Beethoven

4) Do You Love Me Now, Jr. - Breeders feat. J Mascis

5) Help I'm Alive - Metric

6) Mouthful of Diamonds - Phantogram

7) Seether - Veruca Salt

8) We Never Change - Coldplay

9) Been It - Cardigans

10) Do You Love Me Now? - El Jezel

11) Send His Love To Me - PJ Harvey

OK, first off, what the hell happened to Liz? I mean, White Chocolate Space Egg? WTF was that about? How do you go from Exile in Guyville to that tripe?!?!?

Now that I've gotten that out of my system, let's see what has been revealed:

  • 8 of 11 songs are from women. Not surprising, given subject's tastes. Music from a guy's point of view is *so over*.
  • Interesting mix of genres; classical, hip-hop, techno, alt., etc.
  • Same song twice, but by different artists. Subject has a thing for covers. Too bad most of them suck. I mean really. Just google covers of Suffragette City, for example. Horrible - just horrible! Why would you try to do that better than David Bowie?
  • Fuck and Run, Bricks Crumble, Help I'm Alive, Seether, We Never Change, Been It...our subject seems to harbor defeatist, passive-aggressive tendencies.

How, how freaky is that?

Dying is easy...

...writing is hard.

Well, not the actual writing. It's the editing - the keeping of consistency, the tying up of loose ends, the ensuring congruity of symbols and motifs...ugh. That's probably why I decided to just have a couple of beers and watch hockey when I got home form work tonight. And then I wasted time on the internet. Some highlights of my travels:

Failbooking

xkcd

slashdot

and of course, facebook, blogger and youtube.

Back at it tomorrow. Bleah.

If life has taught me one lesson repeatedly, it's to know when I'm beat...

Seriously? It can't be! Has it really been a month since my last post? Urg...blogging is hard! Well, I suppose I ought to do a quick update:

First of all, FAWM has been, for me, an abject failure. Sure I could place the blame for this failure on external factors...in fact, yeah, that's what I'll do. Pretty much the entire month of February was dedicated to finishing my rough draft of my novel from NaNoWriMo (tentative title: Grave Accent. Or, maybe, Imp. Haven't decided yet.)

But it's finally done! At least, as much as you can call the first draft of writing "done". Now begins the work of editing. Ugg. If writing were basketball, the task of editing would be analogous to wiping up the sweat from the floorboards. I'll also start to deconstruct my writing methods, to try to make future NaNoWriMos a little more smooth and manageable. Kinda like ScarJo's hair.

You're welcome.

Despite not having the time to finish FAWM, I was somehow able to squeeze in a few movies this weekend, all of which I'd recommend heartily:

Zombieland: Not the best zombie movie ever (Shaun of the Dead takes the honors there), but definitely makes the short list. You know any movie where the sentence "The worst part was the bit with Bill Murray" has to be pretty awesome.

Moon: Trippy, heady movie with great atmosphere (Ha! Get it?!?).

A Serious Man: Man oh man, I love the Cohen Bros. This is not their best movie ever; in fact, I thought it was a little weak after I saw it. But the more I think about it, the more I realize what a great job they did with the theme of "The Uncertainty of Life". Very meta.

The Invention of Lying: Ricky Gervais has an amazing talent for combining comedy with a genuinely touching story. On a whole other level than almost all other RomComs.

Oh, and one more recommendation: Check out this cover of Britney Spear's Toxic, by alt-country band "Or, the Whale" (no idea what the story is with the name...). Seriously. Better than the original (don't get me started on my love/hate Britney sentiments; maybe some other time). Free download here.

That is all.

FAWM Update I

Not much progress so far on FAWM; just a couple of tracks begun and nowhere near finished. Still lots to do, hours and hours of mixing and editing.

Anything that makes my life, vis-a-vis music production, easier is, by definition, awesome. I'd like to share a couple of resources that I've found very helpful:

Freesound is a huge online interactive community where people and/or possibly cyborgs come together to share and find sound samples. Whether it's a mellow atmospheric pad to back your composition, or just a really cool sound, such as an old school ringing phone, you can find it at freesound.org.

Digifish is an Australian site with sound samples so shockingly good I'm surprised that the Australian government hasn't shut it down yet. Just make sure to get permission before using their sounds in your compositions (it's super easy, even I could do it - just shoot them an email).

Best of luck to everyone in their endeavors this month!

FAMW! RAWR!!!

February Album Writing Month is in the offing!

14 songs in 28 days - sounds hard, right? Due to time constraints associated with the ongoing edit of my entry for the last NaNoWriMo, I've decided to do an instrumental album; sort of a concept deal.

The rough concept I have in mind right now is that it will be a soundtrack that follows an alien spaceship marooned on a strange planet. Sounds weird and/or stupid, I know, but I think I can make it work - I've already got three or four songs outlined in my head.

I'll be (trying) to upload them to the player in my sidebar on a (semi-) regular basis. Wish me luck!

Two things

OK, two things:

#1: I got my NaNo badge! Woohoo!!
I'm still working on my novel, and probably have at least another 30,000 words to get to the end. Then, I've got to get it edited into some semblance of non-suck in order to get my free proof copy, another goodies for making it to 50,000. I mean, I could get the free proof copy of my unedited rough draft, but why?

#2: Heard this song on the radio two days ago, then went home later that day and found a free download of it. Now, can't get it out of my head. Enjoy!

Another update

Still prepping for NaNoWriMo...working on character development/back stories for the most part. I'm a bit frustrated that all the puzzle pieces aren't quite fitting right, but I'm pretty confident tha solutions will present themselves if I just keep at it.

For lack of content, I'll just share a song I just downloaded because I can't get it out of my head. I have this theory, you see, that earworms can only be vanquished by feeding them until they die.

I think once I have committed "The comfort of the knowledge of a rise above the sky but could never parallel the challenge of an acquisition in the here and now" to memory, I'll be over it.

NewMusic Moday - Rule of 3

Well, it took me all of about an hour and a half to throw this together...typical busy Summer weekend. AS with all my recent posts, there are no vox yet; that will be added in Fall, when I have the house back to myself and don't have to worry about near-constant interruptions.

Anyhoo...here ya go!

New Music Moday - Another 7 Deadly Dwarves track

Well, there's another weekend gone. Sad, true, but at least there's New Music Monday!

This Monday's offering is another track from the project I'm currently working on (on and off), 7 Deadly Dwarves. I'm not sure if I've ever explained the concept behind the project, so here it is: each song (and yes, there are exactly 7) is supposed to be under 2 minutes, and be very, very economical in use of vocals. The theme is modeled, loosely, on the 7 deadly sins. Today's offering is entitled "Lazy" (get it? It's like 'sloth', but with a Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs style name. Get it?!?)

New Music Moday - Uphill Both Ways

No promises, but I pinky-swear I'm going to try to put a new musical piece up every Monday. This particular song is from an unusual project I'm working on; something of a novella/concept album. Not really sure how it's going to work, or if it will even work at all, but whatever. It can be fun to crash and burn sometimes.

As always, there is a media player in the sidebar featuring today's selection as well as blasts from the past. Enjoy!

Player on the sidebar. Yay!

So I've added a player to the sidebar that will let anyone who cares to listen to whatever material I happen to be working on, or just weird stuff I want to upload.

Right now, I've got one of the tracks from "7 Deadly Dwarves", which is, to keep it short, I project I'm working on where I try to cram as much into a song while keeping it under two minutes and listenable.

You are welcome to comment, just follow the FOTC rule: "Try to be constructive with your feedback".
